J. Kevin Aguilar
|
Although
not technically trained, J.Kevin has been performing Hip-Hop/Street dancing
since 1989. On a whim, he carried out an idea of his to have himself and
his close friends perform what is known as video choreography. This idea
of performing was thought up to be the outlet of the shy and quiet side
of his personality. Sticking with dancing for the past 17 years, J.Kevin
created a string of dance crews, all of which consisted of close friends.
Halfway through, he had co-founded what seemed to be the perfect fit of
a dance crew for himself, Dawn of a New Age [DNA]. DNA’s energy, creative
choreography, humor and love for performing got them big performances, which
led to notoriety, respect, admiration, and success as a hip-hop dance crew.
Traveling as far as Chicago, some of their venues include Lollapolasia 3
[House of Blues in Chicago] with Filipino Pop/R&B group Kai, East Coast
Dance Crew Competition [Downtime in NYC], Import Showoff [Navy Pier in Chicago],
One Voice Jam [Golden Dragon in Maryland] with Filipino Pop/R&B group
One Voice, and several Filipino Intercollegiate Networking Dialogue [F.I.N.D.]
conferences along the East Coast with California’s own dance crew,
Chain Reaction. As an individual, J.Kevin has helped choreograph and organize
programs for local universities. He has also performed with and choreographed
for the Washington Wizards Dance Team and was Assistant Director for the
Washington Mystics Mayhem Dance Team. In 2002, he and members of DNA executed
what seemed to be a two-year-planning processed goal, establishing Washington
D.C.’s chapter of the internationally known hip-hop dance troupe,
Culture Shock. And within the prior two years, he created and directed yet
another two award-winning dance crews, Project X and DNA: Performance Team.
In his most recent
years of dancing, he became a member of dance company Urban Moves Entertainment.
Contributing choreography to the company, Urban Moves won #1 honors at the
2003 World Hip-Hop Championships, 2nd to Canada. Shortly after, he continued
choreographing for and dancing with the directors of Urban Moves under the
Nu Vision Entertainment dance team, X Faction, which he was Team Captain.
In those combined three years, a few of his accomplishments list as dancing
on stage a few times with Grammy Artist Monica, traveled the world and performed
in two international tours for AFE and JoJo Entertainment and appeared in
R&B artist Lil’ Mo’s video “Dem Boyz”. |

Oscar Rousseaux
|
A
graduate of Cuba’s prestigious National School of Art Instructors,
OSCAR ROUSSEAUX was recognized early in his career as one of Cuba’s
leading cultural promoters, a talented teacher, and a gifted performer.
After dancing for five years with Compañía Folklórica
Cubana JJ , one of Cuba’s premiere folklore troupes, Rousseaux left
Cuba in 1997. Since then, he has traveled across the Americas and to various
European countries, perfecting his art, mastering the traditional batá
drum, and developing a subtle awareness of the folkloric roots common
to all Latin American and Caribbean countries. After
arriving in Washington D.C. in September 2003, Rousseaux rapidly incorporated
himself into the local arts scene, drawing attention not only for his
energetic and invigorating classes but also for his colorful, engaging
choreographies and his charismatic performances. He has received kudos
for his work as Director and Choreographer of ALAFIA Dance & Drum,
the folkloric ensemble that Rousseaux leads through a broad repertoire
of Cuban folklore and Latino dance. The company, which grew out of Rousseaux’s
earlier and widely applauded efforts with the Latin American Folk Institute’s
AshéMoyubba ensemble, has been praised as much for its singing
and live percussion as for its dancing. Rousseaux and the ALAFIA ensemble
have performed at venues around the DC region, including the Smithsonian,
Dance Place, Dance Africa, Artscape (Baltimore), Dance DC, as well as
at embassies and consulates, various educational institutions, Latino
and African cultural events, and a series of neighborhood and folkloric
festivals. In 2007, the Maryland State Art’s Council recognized
Rousseaux’s achievement in dance and choreography with an individual
artist award. As a Master Instructor, Rousseaux has provided workshops
and residencies at both the grammar, high-school, and collegiate level
and participated in the Washington Performing Arts Society’s teaching-artist
program as well as the after-school program at Baltimore’s Port
Discovery. Rousseaux gives regular classes in batá drumming, Afro-Cuban
and Afro-Haitian dance, traditional Cuban rhythms such as the Rumba Cycle,
and all popular forms of Latin dance, including salsa, Rueda de Casino
, merengue, chachacha, bolero and many more. |
Jae Scott |
Jae Scott was born to a military family in California,
and was raised all over the world. He developed a passion for dance after
entering a talent show in fourth grade. Much to his surprise, he won first
place for a dance that he had choreographed to a Michael Jackson hit.
The response from the audience was remarkable, and from that day forward
Jae dedicated much of his time to entering talent shows, taking dance
classes, and performing whenever possible. Although moving from state
to state every few years could have held him back, Jae never wasted any
time finding dance classes and auditions in his new surroundings, putting
his heart and soul into every dance step. Today Jae lives in the DC area,
which is home to some of his favorite dance companies including Capitol
Movement, Inc. and Culture Shock. He has auditioned for many top-notch
choreographers including Laura Edwards, Luam, and Andre Fuentes. Jae has
a diverse dance background and a strong interest in hip-hop. Recently
he has entered freestyle competitions for companies including Monsters
of Hip Hop. Jae is currently a choreographer and 2nd year company member
of Capitol Movement, Inc. |
