On October 13, 2025, Capitol Movement Inc. (CMI) marks a remarkable milestone: twenty years of bringing the transformative power of dance to Washington, DC's youth and communities. What began in 2005 has blossomed into a dynamic force for artistic excellence, youth empowerment, and community building throughout the DMV area.
A Legacy of Excellence and Impact
For two decades, Capitol Movement has provided world-class dance education to students of all ages, with a special focus on those who might otherwise lack access to such opportunities. Today, CMI serves more than 600 students each year through comprehensive programming that includes after-school and summer programs for District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) students, along with its celebrated dance matinee performances.
What sets Capitol Movement apart is its commitment to excellence—bringing renowned dance artists to work directly with DC's youth, providing not just technical training but mentorship, inspiration, and a pathway to creative expression and personal growth.
Recognition from Mayor Muriel Bowser
The significance of Capitol Movement's work has been officially recognized by DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, who extended congratulations to the organization on this milestone anniversary. In her letter, Mayor Bowser acknowledged CMI's evolution into "a dynamic and innovative dance educator" and expressed particular gratitude for the initiatives serving youth and local artists throughout the District.
The Mayor noted her hope that as CMI celebrates this achievement, the organization will "be inspired to even higher heights of achievement in using the power of dance to uplift and empower our communities." On behalf of Washington, DC's more than 700,000 residents, she offered heartfelt thanks for CMI's exemplary work over these twenty years.
